December Task Force Update: A Year in Review

    December 1, 2021

The past year has been a critical one. Despite the challenges brought with COVID-19, we have made many new and exciting changes over the past year with your help. In 2021, the Task Force continued efforts to support community engagement, diversity, equity, access, and inclusion within organizations, and the distribution of resources to communities in need.

Our Lens of Equity Mini-Series began in February, where 30-minute presentations took place during the monthly meetings of the Task Force. The four-part series had over 400 attendees and focused on the components of an equitable organization: People, Policy, Practice, and Promotion. The series discussed how organizations and individuals can put DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion) at the center of their work and start their journey toward better practices and a healthy workplace culture. Moving forward, we are planning a Lens of Equity Summit near the end of 2022 to continue this work and provide tangible tools and information to organizations so they can move forward and build healthy DEAI frameworks.

We continued our DEAI efforts in March with an intimate discussion on how we can support women of color in the workplace, which had over 125 attendees. The event hosted a panel of speakers and covered how to provide support within organizations. The Task Force also presented at the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Form in Washington, D.C. in June. Titled “Casting a Wider N.E.T.,” the presentation discussed how to remove the implicit bias surrounding community engagement and asked: Are you the bridge or the barrier?

With the Task Force’s partnership with Goodwill and other community organizations, our Collaboration for a Cause events continued throughout 2021. During the summer months, we met the community where they were and provided resource bags, hygiene kits, portable cell phone chargers, school supplies, gas cards, bus passes, at-home COVID-19 test kits, and more. The final event of the year, Collaboration for a Cause: Winter Warm Up, provided additional resources to the community on December 10. Through Collaboration for a Cause events, an estimated $297,850 in donated goods have been provided to the community, serving approximately 1,100 families.

In September, the Task Force participated in HIRE 253, a hiring and resource event. In partnership with Project Homeless Connect, HIRE 253 served over 160 attendees and provided resources on registering to vote, childcare, veteran resources, health insurance, employment, and more.

Nearing the end of the summer, we realized that we could avoid working in silos by changing our format, resulting in even stronger communication and collaboration. Previously, we worked on our initiatives through three subgroups: Outreach & Engagement, Organizational Structures, and People & Providers. With our new format, we now hold meetings based on our initiatives: Collaboration for a Cause, Lens of Equity, and the Speaker’s Bureau. We also now hold our main meetings every other month to provide more time to focus on our initiatives.

Leadership, Outreach & Engagement, Organizational Structures, and People & Providers continue to be pillars of the Task Force and aspects of how we work together as members of LOOP City. This change has provided more time to work on our initiatives and grow as a Task Force.

Our successes over the past year would not have been possible without your help. We want to thank you for your unwavering efforts week after week in support of the community. Thank you for being a part of our monthly activities and helping us grow and continue to bring economic mobility to individuals and families in Pierce County.

From our Lens of Equity Mini-Series and Collaboration for a Cause events to our current and future initiatives like the Speaker’s Bureau and The Corner, we are looking forward to continuing our work with you in the new year to make Pierce County a better place.

    October Task Force Update

    October 5, 2021

The Pierce County Community Engagement Task Force is making many new and exciting changes that will help us collaborate, grow, and continue to bring economic mobility to individuals and families in Pierce County.

Our main meetings will now be held every other month to provide more time to focus on our initiatives. However, we will always have spaces for conversations. Our new bi-monthly email newsletter provides information on future meetings, events, and more so we can all stay connected.

We value collaboration and want you to bring your own personal strengths. With this in mind, we started a new onboarding process to meet new members and reconnect with current ones. If you haven’t had the opportunity to set up a meeting with us, we would love to connect with you by setting up an engagement time here. These meetings are not just for new members – we want to connect with you all and make sure everyone can participate in the Task Force in a way that is meaningful to you.

We are also excited to introduce our Initiative Committees. Previously, we have worked on our initiatives through three subgroups: Outreach & Engagement, Organizational Structures, and People & Providers. However, we realized that we could avoid working in silos by changing our format and have even stronger communication and collaboration.

With this in mind, we decided to remove these three subgroups and instead hold meetings based on our initiatives. Leadership, Outreach & Engagement, Organizational Structures, and People & Providers will continue to be pillars of the Task Force and aspects of how we work together as members of LOOP City. This change will provide more time to work on our initiatives and continue to grow as a Task Force.

Information on our three Initiative Committees can be found below. If you would like to join an initiative, please email Chloe Wilhelm at cwilhelm@workforce-central.org.

    Speaker’s Bureau

      • When it comes to creating change in the community, it’s important that we gain an understanding of how we got here in the first place. The Speaker’s Bureau brings our community neighbors with lived experience in the system to the table and helps us figure out how to make the system better. The Speaker’s Bureau offers speakers who have lived experience with homelessness and other challenges to organizations and agencies for presentations. Our goal is to use these stories as a sounding board for new ideas and initiatives to better serve our community.

    Collaboration for a Cause

      • Collaboration for a Cause was started to fill the vast need for disaster-relief goods at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. While the initial focus area was in Tacoma’s Eastside, it soon became apparent that more communities were being impacted as the crisis continued. As word of Collaboration for a Cause grew, the Pierce County Community Engagement Task Force joined with Goodwill to continue this large-scale collaborative event to provide much-needed resources and services to Pierce County’s most hard-hit areas.

    Lens of Equity

      • The Lens of Equity initiative focuses on how promoting DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion) in an organization can serve the community. How can we meet the needs of the community? How can we increase access? How can we keep a DEAI lens in the forefront of what we do? Earlier this year, our Lens of Equity Mini-Series discussed these questions and provided great resources and tools (a list of which can be found here). Moving forward, the Lens of Equity initiative is planning an October 2022 Summit that will continue this work.

In addition to the initiatives above, we also have our series The Corner, which highlights our partners and their work in the community. This series, along with our initiative committees, will help launch us into additional workshops and conversations within the Task Force.

All in all, we’re here to make Pierce County a better place. We are looking forward to working with you!

    June Task Force Update

The Pierce County Community Engagement Task Force has recently completed our Lens of Equity Mini-Series, which focused on the four components of an equitable organization: People, Policy, Practice, and Promotion. We’re planning for the series to be followed in early 2022 by the Lens of Equity Summit, an interactive event for individuals and organizations to learn how to amplify their journey towards creating anti-racist workplace culture.

In addition, we’re excited to have launched our new video series called The Corner. The Corner highlights our partnerships, the people behind them, and their work in our community. Our first guest on the Corner was Jennifer Robbins from Help Kitchen, a new nonprofit organization in Pierce County that strives to bridge the hunger gap for families and individuals while helping local restaurants.

Most recently, our June Task Force meeting focused on mental health awareness and self-care. The event featured two speakers from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and Beacon Health Options who led presentations, launched discussions, and provided resources.

Moving into July, we are looking forward to launching additional workshops and conversations within the Task Force.
